Giggs gutted by Beckham snub

Ryan Giggs has revealed his disappointment that former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham didn't make the cut for the Great Britain Olympics football squad.

Giggs, 38, was one of three over-age players - the others being Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards - picked by coach Staurt Pearce for his 18-man squad. However, having played with Beckham for ten years at Old Trafford, the Welshman feels sad that his friend was not one of those selected.

"Obviously as a former team-mate and a friend of David I am disappointed for him, but he will take it on the chin and carry on his career," Giggs told BBC One. "It's one of those things, it was not meant to be.

"That's Stuart Pearce's job to pick a team that he thinks will win and that's what he's done. Unfortunately David is not in that 18. I would like to say as a friend I wish he was. But I am sure the lads who are picked will go out and do the best they can."

Giggs has never played in a major championship with Wales and is relishing the chance to be part of Team GB.

"I'm really excited," he added. "Coming to London and feeling the buzz around the place for the Olympics, seeing the signs everywhere. It's a massive event and one I am looking forward to."

Redknapp wants new EPL job

Harry Redknapp says he has 'faith' he can still contribute as a manager and wants to work in the English Premier League.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has revealed clubs from all over the world have approached him to be their head coach, but he will not rush the decision over taking a new job.

Having led Tottenham to fourth spot in the Premier League last season and never lower than fifth during his three years in charge, Redknapp remains certain he can succeed at the top of English football.

"I could manage anywhere," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"I have certainly not lost any faith in my ability.

"I have left Tottenham in an unbelievable position from when I went to the club to where they are now.

"It could not have gone better; it has been four fantastic years."

In the two seasons prior to Redknapp's arrival, Tottenham had finished 11th and eighth.

The north London club qualified for the Champions League for the first time during his second season in charge.

Tottenham sacked the 65-year-old on June 13, and with the job at White Hart Lane the only vacancy in the Premier League, it remains to be seen where Redknapp will find employment.

"That is the only place to manage for me," he said.

"As I say, you never know what comes up."

The former Portsmouth, Southampton and West Ham manager has been heavily linked with a lucrative job in the Middle East.

"I have had loads of offers from abroad," he said.

"But it is not something I am going to dive in and take the first job that comes up.

"If I am going to take a job, it has got to be a good job - the right job."

Luuk de Jong in Newcastle link

EPSN are reporting this afternoon that FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong would cost ‘absurd money’ following interest from Newcastle United.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is keen to add another striker to his ranks and after the successful purchase of Papiss Cisse in January, the club are backing him all the way.

It had even been suggested that Newcastle and Twente were in negotiations over the transfer of de Jong, but this has been dismissed by Twente manager Steve McClaren.

The former England manager said: “Nobody has to leave. Only an absurd bid would see Luuk leave.”

This could be an attempt to get more money from Newcastle or it could be that Twente are desperate not to sell one of their star men.

The 21-year-old scored 32 goals last season, so you can certainly see why Newcastle – and Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach are interested.

One of the most highly rated youngsters in Holland, demand for his signature is set to be significant and if Twente are to sell, they want a fair price.

In the end it could come down to the demands of the player. Does he want a move to England, Germany or to remain in Holland with Twente?

The next few weeks are certainly crucial for the development of this story. Newcastle may have to be patient in pursuit of the striker.

Maicon on his way

Chelsea are closing in a deal to sign Inter Milan right-back Douglas Maicon who is ready for a move away from Italy after seven years.

The Brazilian international has also been attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid but reports have emerged suggesting the Blues have won the chase for his signature.

Inter have agreed to let him leave San Siro on a free transfer, even though he still has a year left to run on his existing contract, following talks with the 30-year-old, although the terms of the agreement bar him from moving to another Italian side.

His wage demands won't be small but new Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo believes it will be money well spent to secure the services of an experienced defender in a problem position for the Champions League holders.

Maicon will be hoping to put his injury problems behind at Stamford Bridge after a fitness plagued season last term at Inter which restricted the usually free-scoring full-back to just two goals from 24 appearances.

Blanc quits as France coach

Laurent Blanc has opened the door to Tottenham after leaving his position as France coach following the expiry of his contract.

The Frenchman, who has been linked with Spurs following Harry Redknapp's departure, has turned down the offer of a new contract with the French Football Federation.

Blanc, who took charge of the national side after the disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign, led Les Bleus to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, where they lost 2-0 to Spain.

The former Bordeaux boss held talks with FFF president Noel le Graet on Thursday and had been offered a new two-year contract, but he was told that he would have to reduce his coaching staff. On Saturday it emerged that he had decided to walk away from the position.

A statement on the FFF website read: "Within the period provided for reflection, Laurent Blanc, on Saturday contacted the President of the FFF, Noel Le Graet, to indicate his decision not to seek the renewal of his contract of national coach.

"Mr Le Graet has acknowledged and applauded the work of Laurent Blanc at the head of the France team since August 2010. The executive committee of the federation is meeting on Tuesday but no comments will be made by the FFF and its president before the press conference scheduled at the conclusion of this work session.''

Blanc, a World Cup and European Championship winner during his playing career, had overseen a 23-game unbeaten run that ended with a surprise 2-0 defeat to Sweden in the final group game of this summer's tournament.

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps, who captained France to glory in 1998 and 2000, is believed to be the leading contender for the position. UEFA president Michel Platini said on Saturday afternoon that he welcomed Deschamps' candidature.

"If Laurent Blanc [leaves] it is a shame because he had indicated his wish to continue, but Didier Deschamps is among the very good coaches," Platini said.

"It is the FFF president who chooses. I do not think we have bad players. Progress has been made. We have potential but it is our place in the quarter-finals. Anyway, Didier Deschamps does know the team."

Anzhi sign Ivorian striker Traore

Anzhi Makhachkala have confirmed the signing of Ivorian striker Lacina Traore from fellow Russian Premier League side Kuban Krasnodar for an undisclosed fee.

Traore, 22, scored 18 times in his debut season in Russia, following a switch from CFR Cluj last summer, drawing interest from Liverpool in recent months.

Anzhi general director Aivaz Kaziakhmedov said: "Traore's transfer is totally in line with the goals that our club has set this season, achieving the highest possible results in the Russian league as well as in Europe."

The Ivory Coast forward will join fellow African stars Samuel Eto'o and Christopher Samba at the big-spending club, as they look to make themselves into a force capable of challenging for European honours.

Reading close in on Pogrebnyak

Reading have agreed terms to sign Russian international striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Manager Brian McDermott sees Pogrebnyak as the ideal signing to add more experience to his side ahead of their Premier League campaign next season.

Pogrebnyak, 28, impressed during a six-month stay at Fulham last season as he went on to score six goals in 12 games for Martin Jol's outfit after he was allowed to leave German side VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer.

It now looks as if Reading are set to beat Fulham to the striker's signature in what will represent something of a transfer coup for the newly-promoted side.

A statement on the club's official website read as follows: "Reading Football Club has agreed terms with Pavel Pogrebnyak to join the club.

"The player has already completed a medical and the deal is now only subject to the player obtaining a UK work permit.

"Reading Football Club anticipate completing the signing within the next 7 days."

Pogrebnyak featured for Russia at Euro 2012 and has gone on to make 32 appearances for his country, scoring eight times.

Reds step up Baines move

Manchester United are set to turn their attentions back to Everton's Leighton Baines and want him on board before their African trip.

United had stepped up their interest in Jordi Alba from Valencia after his outstanding performances at Euro 2012, but Barca have now agreed a fee with their La Liga rivals according to reports in Spain.

United will shift their attention back to Everton's Baines as Sir Alex Ferguson targets a player who can push Patrice Evra for his place and bolster the depth in his squad.

Everton are in no rush to sell and want value their player at £20m but United are reluctant to go above £15m and will push to land him before their trip to South Africa, they leave on July 16th.

Canaries sign defender Whittaker

Norwich have signed Rangers and Scotland defender Steven Whittaker on a four-year deal.

Whittaker, 28, was a free agent after becoming one of ten players who declined to transfer their contract to Charles Green's "newco" Rangers over the summer.

He becomes Chris Hughton's first signing for Norwich, and the Canaries manager told the club's official website: "In Steven we have a player who can play anywhere across the back four and anywhere across midfield, so there's plenty of versatility there.

"It's probably a good time for him. Sometimes it is time to move on to a different club and go there with a lot of enthusiasm, and he has international experience too.

"He has of course been used to playing at a very high level when he was at Rangers and in a lot of big games with a passionate crowd behind him. So the stage of the Premier League is certainly one that won't faze him."

Whittaker spent five years at Ibrox after joining from Hibernian for £2 million, winning three Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups. He also played in Rangers' 2008 UEFA Cup final defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.

"All of my experience to date has been in Scotland, so I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League - I'm very excited about it," he said.

"When I spoke to Chris Hughton I was very impressed with his plans to progress Norwich City, and everyone I've spoken to in the game has had nothing but praise for the club and the city of Norwich. I am looking forward to meeting up with the squad and the staff."

Bale out for Olympics

Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale has suffered an injury which will rule him out of this summer's London Olympics, according to reports.

The Wales winger was expected to be one of the main attractions in Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad when the Games get under way.

But Bale, who on Wednesday signed a new contract at Tottenham, is understood to have aggravated an old back and hip injury while on a personal training run to stay fit for the Olympics.

The setback will come as a major blow to Spurs as they prepare for the start of the Premier League season at Newcastle on 18th August.

And, more immediately, Bale's absence will come as greater setback to Pearce, who is expected to name his Team GB squad on Monday.

Team GB have been drawn in Group A for the Games and will begin their campaign against Senegal on 26th July before taking on United Arab Emirates and Uruguay.

Pearce has already caused huge debate by surprisingly deciding to omit Olympic ambassador and former England captain David Beckham from his squad.

Instead, Manchester United's Ryan Giggs, Liverpool's Craig Bellamy and Manchester City's Micah Richards are understood to have been preferred as the three overage players for the Under-23 tournament.

Beckham said on Thursday of his omission in a statement: "Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me.

"So I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad.

"Naturally I am very disappointed but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

Bremen sign Petersen on loan

Werder Bremen have signed Bayern Munich striker Nils Petersen on a one-year loan deal.

Petersen has also extended his contract at the Allianz Arena until 2015, and Bayern Munich general manager Christian Nerlinger is hopeful the regular first team football on offer at Bremen will be good for the 23-year-old's development.

"Nils is a great talent, and we want to get him some match practice - which he will be able to do with Bremen," Nerlinger told the club's official website.

"The fact that we have also extended his contract is a sign of how much we value him. We want him to have a successful future in the Bundesliga and Bayern."

Bremen have lost veteran forward Claudio Pizarro to Bayern, who also signed Mario Mandzukic to provide cover for Mario Gomez.

With the increased competition for places in Jupp Heynckes' first team, Petersen has decided to prove his Bundesliga credentials elsewhere and Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf is hoping he will be able to score heavily for his new club.

"He is a centre forward who has demonstrated his goal-scoring talent. We are delighted that he is joining us. We are sure that he'll have all the right conditions to develop here," Schaaf said.

Keita rules out Reds move

Liverpool's hopes of signing Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita have been dashed after the Mali star ruled out a switch to Anfield.

The 32-year-old played just a bit part role in Barca's success under Pep Guardiola, and the following his former manager's departure, he is seeking to extend his stay at the Nou Camp.

Talks are currently ongoing between Keita and the club regarding a new contract as he prepare to enter the final year of his existing agreement, but he is hopeful a deal can be thrashed out to prolong his involvement with the Catalan giants.

Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for the midfielder's services this summer, but he is adamant he is not destined for the Premier League anytime soon.

Keita told Spanish newspaper Marca: "I won't be going to Anfield. "

I'm waiting to talk to the club to clear up my future.

"I want to stay at Barca, that's my wish. I'd like to retire at the club and I hope it will be possible. "

The duo are two of the few certainties for the tour, with several players set to be rested after Euro 2012 while others, including Ryan Giggs and David de Gea, are set for Olympic action.

Besides those absentees, Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling will not be considered due to injury, and Darren Fletcher has been sidelined long-term with a bowel complaint.

"It's obviously very difficult in a year when we have had a Euro tournament and we also have the Olympics this year,'' said Ferguson. "The final squad hasn't been decided yet but we will be taking the strongest team we have available.

"We are all looking forward to the pre-season tour. I am delighted that our new newest signings, Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, will be in the travelling squad along with more established players such as Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Ji Sung-Park.''

Ferguson added: "I have always said how important it is to get a good pre-season behind us. We saw the impact a good pre-season had on the start of last year's campaign.''

Cabaye excited by Europa League football at Newcastle

Newcastle star Yohan Cabaye has admitted he can’t wait to get the club’s Europa League campaign underway.

The French playmaker was a key member of the Toon team who impressed and finished the season in fifth position, narrowly missing out on a place in the top four.

And Cabaye, who starred for his nation at Euro 2012, believes that testing themselves against some of Europe’s best teams will be great for the club and its supporters.

"Playing in Europe next season is massive for the Club and massive for the players as it shows progression," he told Newcastle’s official website.

"We have to play in these sort of competitions for the experience. It can only be a good thing for us as a squad.

"And the fans will love it too. I can't wait for a European night in our stadium - it will be great.

Ramos wants to avoid spot kicks

Spain defender Sergio Ramos hopes the Euro 2012 final against Italy is not decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Reigning European champions Spain beat Portugal 4-2 on penalties to progress from the semi-finals on Wednesday.

And Ramos does not want to see a repeat of the shootout in the final, to be played in Kiev on Sunday.

"Honestly, I would not like to go into a penalty shoot-out again," he said during a press conference.

"But we are very eager to win and for that we will need to stay humble and try to do things well, while respecting Italy.

"These days, memories of our recent past come to our mind. This motivates us to win this final and relive those incredible moments with the Spanish people."

Real Madrid defender Ramos converted his penalty against Portugal with an audacious chip, but said it was not intended as a message to those who criticised him for his failed attempt against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals.

"A lot of things were said and the truth is that they hurt my pride," Ramos said.

"But I did not take the penalty like this for any special reason, only because I was confident.

"There were many people waiting for me to miss, but that never affected me."

Andrea Pirlo has been an integral part of Italy's run to the final, but Ramos stressed the Juventus man was not the only threat to the defending champions.

"He is a unique player, one of the best in Italy, but he is not their only threat," Ramos said.

"What has taken them to the final is their collective game. There is not just one stand-alone player."

Barcelona player Cesc Fabregas, who also netted in the shootout against Portugal, also singled out Pirlo, along with strikers Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano, as Italy's danger-men.

"We will have to stop Italy's attackers, and Pirlo as well," Fabregas said.

"Balotelli is a great player and he showed it yesterday. He scored two great goals against Germany in the semi-finals.

"That says it all. I really liked the way he played. He will be a threat, like Antonio Cassano or any other player."

Foster completes West Brom switch

West Brom have completed the signing of goalkeeper Ben Foster from Birmingham, the Barclays Premier League club have confirmed.

Foster, who spent last season on loan at the Hawthorns, has moved to Albion for an undisclosed fee.

The former England international has put pen to paper on an initial three-year contract with a further two-year option in the club's favour.

Foster becomes the first signing for new Albion head coach Steve Clarke.

"Ben's been a priority signing all summer," said Clarke. "His performances last season were exceptional and it was important for the club to strike a permanent deal for him.

"It's a great signing for me and an even better one for the club. I think the supporters will be delighted we've been able to keep him on board - and make him our player.

"In any league in the world you want a goalkeeper that is going to make match-winning saves, turn draws into wins and defeats into draws. A quality goalkeeper is worth 10 or 12 points a season to you and that's certainly what we think we've got in Ben Foster."

Foster's form last season saw him voted Albion's supporters' player of the year and players' player of the year. He kept 10 clean sheets, equalling the club record for the most shut-outs in a Barclays Premier League campaign.

West Brom's sporting and technical Director Dan Ashworth said: "Ben showed to everyone last season how important he is to us, making vital saves at key moments in games.

"He was happy here, enjoyed the goalkeeper coaching under Dean Kiely, the facilities, the supporters, and everything about the club. The fact Ben was with us on loan put us in a prime position to sign him."

Euro 2012 : Best Xl Semi-Finals

The two Euro 2012 semi-finals produced plenty of drama and many a talking point; with Spain edging past Portugal on penalties and Italy upsetting the odds with a deserved win over Germany. Spain and Germany were largely expected to control their respective matches, but WhoScored.com’s team of the semi-finals shows that things did not follow the script, with the Italians leading the ratings in midfield and attack. Here we look at the best players from the latest round at the Euros.

Between the posts, Gigi Buffon leads the way, only conceding by way of a late penalty, making 6 saves en route to picking up a rating of 7.3. There have undoubtedly been better goalkeeping performances at the Euros, but the importance of this match means Buffon’s work should not go unnoticed. As Germany pushed to try and get back into the game, the Juventus stopper stood strong and certainly played a big part in maintaining Italy’s lead.

Both Spanish full-backs make it into the semi-final XI, with Alvaro Arbeloa having a decent game up against Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jordi Alba impressing on the other flank. Arbeloa made 6 tackles and was not dribbled past once despite coming up against one of the world’s best players, though he did commit an outrageous 8 fouls, which was 6 more than any other Spain player. Alba, at left-back, made 3 tackles and 2 interceptions, whilst also contributing in an attacking sense, making a key pass and completing 3 successful dribbles, as he picked up a WhoScored rating of 7.2.

The fact that the final Spanish inclusion is centre-back Sergio Ramos says a great deal about the semis. Ramos made an impressive 7 clearances, as well as 3 tackles and 2 interceptions, while his late free-kick that flew narrowly over the crossbar nearly won the game. He also capped a fine performance with a nonchalant ‘panenka’ dink in the penalty shootout. Alongside him is Portugal defender and Real Madrid teammate Pepe who put in a committed performance, making 10 clearances and 7 interceptions, as his side shut Spain out for a full 120 minutes. His display won him a 7.7 match rating and the Man of the Match award.

Pass-master Andrea Pirlo again defied the years with a complete display from his position in front of the back four against Germany. He completed 92.3% of his passes, which is his best rate in a single game at Euro 2012 so far. 9 of his 65 overall passes were played long, and all 9 of those reached their target, while his rating was also boosted by a vital clearance off the line from an early Hummels shot.

Joao Moutinho put in an accomplished display against Spain, playing some extremely tidy football under the pressure of Spain’s intense pressing game. He played 2 key passes, though much of his work came when his side were chasing the play, breaking up Spain’s attacking with a vastly impressive 9 interceptions and 3 tackles. Alongside him in central midfield is Riccardo Montolivo, who played in an advanced midfield role for Italy, providing the assist for Mario Balotelli’s second goal with his only key pass of the game. After his side went 2 up, much of his work came defensively, as he made the joint most interceptions of any Italy player (5) and the second most tackles (3), despite only playing 64 minutes of the game.

Mesut Ozil was once again a constant threat for the Germans, and he lines up in behind the front two, as he did in WhoScored.com’s team of the quarter-final. This time around, Ozil had 91 touches and made 4 key passes, which were both more than any other player on the pitch. He also scored from the spot, giving Germany a late glimmer of hope that ultimately proved to be nothing more than that, though he held his nerve well at an important time in the game.

Up top, there can be little debate about ‘super’ Mario Balotelli’s inclusion, with the Manchester City frontman scoring 2 well-taken goals from just 3 attempts. Before this game, the controversial striker had scored just 1 goal from 20 shots at the Euros, and his conversion rate of 5% was the lowest of all goalscorers at the tournament. However, with his 2 strikes here, he upped his rate to over 13% and is now bookies’ favourite to win the golden boot, a remarkable turnaround, and his performance won him the best WhoScored rating of the semi-finals, with 7.8.

Joining him up front is his strike partner Antonio Cassano, who set up Balotelli’s first goal after a great bit of skill and a cross into the six-yard box that gave the striker little chance of missing. That was one of 2 key passes he made in his 58 minutes on the pitch, whilst he also competed 1 successful dribble and forced a save from Manuel Neuer with his only attempt at goal.

Spurs confirm Corluka exit

Tottenham have confirmed the departure of defender Vedran Corluka to Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 26-year-old joined Spurs from Manchester City for a reported £8.5million in 2008, having impressed in his single season in the north but being keen to join international team-mate Luka Modric at White Hart Lane.

He made 110 appearances for Tottenham, scoring once, but found himself behind Kyle Walker in the pecking order, and he was farmed out to Bayer Leverkusen for the second half of this past season while also clashing with manager Harry Redknapp when he criticised a lack of squad rotation.

A move this summer had been anticipated and Lokomotiv made their move this week under new head coach Slaven Bilic, who was coach of Croatia for six years before stepping down after their elimination from Euro 2012.

"We have reached agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow for the transfer of Vedran Corluka," Tottenham said in a statement on their website.

"We wish Vedran all the best for the future."

Chelsea still after Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric

Chelsea have informally inquired about Luka Modric but are yet to make a new bid for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy remains determined not to sell the Croatian to another Premier League club but it is believed Real Madrid’s interest has cooled in recent days.

Matters are complicated because Modric is threatening to hand in a transfer request while Spurs maintain that they value the 26 year-old, who is also wanted by Manchester United, at £50 million.

Spurs have secured Gareth Bale on a new four-year deal and are preparing the way for the appointment of a new manager, probably next week, with coaches Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond leaving the club on Thursday.

Andre Villas-Boas has been in advanced negotiations with Spurs for the past few days. If appointed, he is expected to bring in Portuguese assistants José Mario Rocha, a fitness coach, and Daniel Sousa, the head opposition scout, who left Chelsea with him in March. However, he will also appoint an assistant manager and a coach, while an enhanced role is being considered for Tim Sherwood, the club’s technical coordinator.

Levy is still considering whether to appoint a director of football, elevate Sherwood into that role or delay matters while he settles on the club’s management team, squad and move to the new training ground.

Spurs are still braced for Modric to leave this summer but only if the price is right. They rejected three offers from Chelsea last summer - including one of £40 million close to transfer deadline day. Roman Abramovich is understood to have made a promise to Modric that he would return for him this year.

Real Madrid made an inquiry earlier this summer and recently indicated they would like to offer cash plus Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin, but that interest has lessened in recent days. Sahin has also said he does not want to be a makeweight.

Yakubu heads to China

Yakubu Aiyegbeni has agreed a switch to Chinese side Guangzhou.

The former Blackburn man has followed in the footsteps of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka in heading to the Far East, with the former Chelsea duo both joining Shanghai Shenhua.

And the 29-year-old striker is relishing the prospect of experiencing a different culture after nine years in England with Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester on loan and Blackburn.

"There were many clubs interested according to the media, but the only people who made direct contact have been Guangzhou R&F," said Yakubu.

"Many will ask why China? The truth is there is not much to prove after scoring almost a century of goals in the Premier League - considered as one of the best in the world.

"I thank Blackburn Rovers, the fans, fellow players for making my one season there seem like a decade.

"I appreciate their support and I hope the club will come back again into the top-flight as soon as possible."

Yakubu had been looking to leave Blackburn following their relegation from the top flight last season and insists money played no part in his decision.

"Money cannot buy you happiness and what I have found from the people in China is love, happiness, sincerity and warmth and I can't wait to get started here," he added.

Becks 'has 2012 role to play'

David Beckham will be offered a role at the Olympics after missing out on selection for Team GB.

Stuart Pearce has left the 37-year-old out of his 18-man football squad, instead naming Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards as the three over-23 players.

The decision has been widely criticised given Beckham's role in the initial bidding process, but London 2012 chairman Lord Coe will not cut the LA Galaxy superstar loose altogether.

He said: "David has been an extraordinary supporter, probably our No 1 supporter, of the Games from the very beginning and is keen to continue his enthusiastic support right to the end. He really gets this.

"He is from east London and knows how important the Games and sport are to young people.

"He is a great role model and we are lucky to have such an advocate. I will be talking to him about a Games time role."

Spurs closing on Villas-Boas

Tottenham could make Andre Villas-Boas their new manager as early as this weekend.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is ready to give the Portuguese a second crack at Premier League management just four months after the end of his short spell at Chelsea.

Villas-Boas is as short as 1/14 to replace Harry Redknapp, and Tottenham cleared the decks for his arrival by confirming the departures of coaches Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond on Thursday.

Gareth Bale's decision to extend his contract will be welcome and a deal for Gylfi Sigurdsson is close, but the former Porto boss has a fight on his hands to keep Luka Modric.

Modric is again being linked with Real Madrid and is on record saying he wants to leave for a club in the Champions League.

But, according to former Real star Guti, the Croatian is not good enough for the Bernabeu.

"He hasn't even been the key man for Tottenham," Guti said. "I don't think he's done enough to play for Madrid."

Croatian striker Petric joins Fulham

Fulham have completed the signing of Croatian striker Mladen Petric on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Craven Cottage after leaving Hamburg last month.

Petric, who worked under Fulham boss Martin Jol when he was in charge of the German club for the 2008-2009 season, scored 38 goals in 98 games during his four-year spell at the Imtech Arena.

He has has played 44 times for Croatia, scoring 12 goals, but was left out of their squad for Euro 2012 by manager Slaven Bilic.

"I like the Premier League and it has always been one of my wishes to come here," Petric told his new club's official website.

"I played with Hamburg against the dlub two years ago in the Europa League. It was very nice to play at Craven Cottage with a fantastic crowd and I have enjoyed a good relationship with every member of the club I have met since.

"I’m very happy to be part of what is happening at Fulham. The club is doing very well and that was why I decided to come here.

Red Bulls' Thierry Henry: Rafa is the Boss

Rafa Marquez is the biggest lightning rod on the Red Bulls’ roster, and arguably the most controversial player they have. But in the wake of a stellar stint as a centerback in Sunday’s 3-2 win over archrival D.C. United, captain Thierry Henry said his friend and fellow Designated Player is misunderstood.

“Something that people didn’t mention after the game against D.C. When Rafa plays at the back, it’s another story,” Henry said today. “I know a lot of the (fans and writers) don’t like him too much, but watch the game.”

Marquez moved back from midfield to replace injured Swedish international Markus Holgersson, and had a calming influence on the back line and in possession.

“Rafa is the boss, for me. He just showed it. You’ve got to respect that,’’ said Henry. “Things happen on the field sometime, to me, a lot of players. But I invite people to watch the game that he played on Sunday. People didn’t talk a lot about it.

“He calms everyone down at the back. Always when there is chaos, he puts the ball down, passes it around on the ground instead of kicking it in the stands and give it back to D.C. In basketball, they call that a rebound. You have the ball again, and 10 times per half it’s another story than kicking it in the stands and losing it. For me, that’s a big deal.”

“We know he played there because some people were missing but I think people misunderstand Rafa sometimes. He’s a great person, he’s a competitor like I can be sometimes you can go over the edge but he’s a great guy. I hope people understand how valuable he is for us.”

Marquez is the captain of the Mexican National Team, the archrival of the U.S. But he hasn’t been able to replicate his El Tri form while with the Red Bulls, making mistakes on the field and mistakes in judgment in dealing with teammates.

The tempestuous Marquez has also picked up nine yellow cards, and served three suspensions since he last season’s playoffs. But when Henry was asked why he thought Marquez was misunderstood, he declined to guess.

“I don’t know,’’ Henry said. “I understand him. I’m not in the mind of other people, I understand him.”

Balotelli sends Italy into final

Mario Balotelli finally answered the critics by delivering on the big stage against Germany in Warsaw tonight. The Manchester City striker struck twice in the first half to set the Azzurri on course for a Euro 2012 final showdown with defending champions Spain in Kiev on Sunday.

The shell-shocked Germans looked more dangerous after introducing Marco Reus at half-time, but they were unable to penetrate a resolute Italian defence until Mesut Ozil's injury-time penalty.

After his impressive display against England, Andrea Pirlo was again central for the Azzurri, and the midfielder was perfectly placed to clear Mats Hummels' scuffed effort off the line on five minutes as Italy started nervously.

Gianluigi Buffon then unconvincingly cleared a Jerome Boateng cross before proving equal to Toni Kroos' effort from outside the area, as Germany continued to ask questions.

Manuel Neuer eased himself into the game with two routine saves, but he was helpless on 20 minutes when Italy took a shock lead.

Antonio Cassano easily turned inside Hummels and crossed to the awaiting Balotelli, who soared over the wrong-footed Holger Badstuber and headed home from close range.

Sixteen minutes later the Manchester City striker went one better. Riccardo Montolivo's ball bamboozled the German defence, which gave Balotelli time to rifle a dipping 20-yard shot past Neuer.

Germany piled bodies forward after the break and Buffon twice denied Reus, while captain Philip Lahm spurned a great chance following a one-two with Toni Kroos.

Claudio Marchisio and Antonio Di Natale should have sealed victory when presented with gilt-edged opportunities, but despite Ozil's spot-kick, Italy held on to maintain their unbeaten record over Germany in competitive games.
