Alessandro Del Piero scored four goals as Sydney FC crushed Wellington Phoenix 7-1 in the A-League at the Allianz Stadium.
Del Piero completed his hat-trick before half-time as Sydney reduced Phoenix to a fourth successive defeat. Phoenix suffered their heaviest A-League defeat as Del Piero made it nine goals for the season.
Joel Griffiths marked his Sydney debut with the opening goal before Del Piero's double and a goal from Jason Culina put them well in charge before Del Piero completed his hat-trick with the fifth. After the break Del Piero added his fourth before Ben Sigmund got a consolation for Phoenix, with substitute Yairo Yau getting Sydney's seventh. The win moved Sydney four points clear of Phoenix, who are bottom of the table.
Melbourne Victory strengthened their grip on third spot with a 1-0 win away to ten-man Perth Glory. The home side's Scott Jamieson gave Victory the lead with an own goal after 25 minutes before Glory's Joshua Risdon was sent off with 22 minutes to go.
Central Coast Warriors stretched their lead at the top of the table to three points after behind held 0-0 at home by mid-table Newcastle Jets.
