Bologna want Ramirez stay

Bologna coach Stefano Pioli has emphasized on the importance of Gaston Ramirez to the team.

“He arrived with great enthusiasm. Everyone knows what my thoughts about him are. He has the technical ability and his morale is high”, Pioli told the press.

He added, ”I would be glad if he remained with us. Ramirez and Diamenti are our pride and joy and they can single handedly win matches for us.”

Rooney would love RVP to join United

ayne Rooney has heaped praise on Robin van Persie as Manchester United aim to convince the Arsenal forward to move to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman revealed in July that he would not sign a new contract at the Emirates, citing a disagreement 'in the way Arsenal should move forward' and speculation over his future has been rife ever since.

Although Van Persie missed the club's Asia tour, he flew out to Germany on Monday for a week-long training camp, suggesting a potential move is far from certain.

Indeed, claims that the demands of his agent looked as if they would scupper the move to Manchester surfaced on Thursday.

Despite this, Rooney was happy to speak about a potential move for the Arsenal captain.

"Of course he's a player that I admire," Rooney said.

"He's a fantastic player, he's been amazing for Arsenal over many years. Last season was probably his best season of all, he scored a lot of goals.

"If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad."

Asked whether he could play alongside Van Persie, Rooney added: "I'd like to think so - but you'd have to ask the manager about that.

"There's a lot of forwards here already with myself, (Danny) Welbeck, Chicharito and (Dimitar) Berbatov, who's still here.

"So there's a lot of forwards fighting for a place."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Wednesday that United had made an offer for Van Persie but revealed there had been no breakthrough with Arsenal.

United have just one game remaining in their pre-season schedule against German side Hannover on Saturday after drawing 0-0 with Barcelona in a glamour friendly in Gothenburg on Wednesday.

Rooney was substituted at half-time having missed a penalty in the first half.

"I'm not sure why that was, you’d have to ask the manager," he said.

"I think he felt some other players needed minutes. But I'm excited, I feel good, I feel fresh and I'm looking forward to the new season.

"It's a big season for us after last season and we all need to be ready for it.

"It was a good workout. I would have obviously liked a bit longer but it was a chance for some of the players to get some more game time.

"It was a good result - disappointing to lose on penalties but a good run-out."

Europa League Full Draw

Liverpool have been drawn to face Hearts in an all-British affair in the Europa League play-offs.

The Reds cruised into the final qualifying round of the competition with a 4-0 aggregate win over FC Gomel of Belarus, while Hearts qualified for this stage by virtue of winning the William Hill Scottish Cup.

Newcastle will face Atromitos of Greece while Motherwell have been given a tough assignment after being drawn against Spanish Primera Division side Levante.

The Magpies must travel to Greece in-between their Premier League curtain-raiser at home to Tottenham and a trip to Champions League winners Chelsea.

Atromitos will prove to be a tough challenge in likely testing conditions, with the Athens-based side finishing fourth in the Greek Super League.

They were 23 points adrift of champions Olympiacos, with whom Alan Pardew's men drew 1-1 in a friendly in Portugal last month.

Panathinaikos dumped Motherwell out of the Champions League stage with a thumping 5-0 aggregate win in the recently completed third qualifying round.

Stuart McCall's men therefore drop into the Europa League and they find their route to the main draw blocked by Levante, who enter European football for the first time after finishing sixth in La Liga last season.

They do not have any links to Scottish football but do count former Rangers duo Gabriel Amato and Shota Arveladze and current Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallby amongst their ex-players.

Well will host the first leg before travelling to the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia a week later.

Alves sustains ankle injury in friendly

Barcelona full-back Dani Alves faces a brief spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

Alves complained about pain in his lower leg in the aftermath of the pre-season friendly, and sat out of training a day later because of the knock he was later found to be carrying.

The club have since announced that the injury does not seem to be too serious, but it is unlikely that the 29-year-old will feature in the Catalans' final pre-season game against Dinamo Bucharest on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Barcelona are confident that Alves will have recovered from his ankle sprain in time for their La Liga opener against Real Sociedad on August 19.

The Brazil international recently returned to full training after a two-month lay-off due to a shoulder injury.

Galatasaray loan Felipe Melo from Juventus

Felipe Melo has rejoined Galatasaray from Juventus on a season-long loan, with the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

The Turkish champions have paid the Turin giants a fee of 1.75-million-euros to borrow the Brazil international for the coming season, and will have to shell out an additional 6.5 million euros if they opt to buy him outright.

Gala have also confirmed via their official website that Melo will be earning an annual salary of 2.9 million euros, plus a bonus of 25,000 euros per game.

The 29-year-old already spent the previous campaign on loan at the Istanbul giants, who were keen to sign him on a permanent basis this summer.

Nevertheless, they have now had to settle for another temporary deal after refusing to meet Juve's demands for a full transfer.

Melo, who has 22 caps for Brazil to his name, previously wore the jerseys of clubs such as Flamengo, Almeria and Fiorentina.

Juv boss given 10-month ban

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has been banned for 10 months after an investigation into match-fixing.

Last year Conte, 43, led the club to the Serie A title in his first season in charge without losing a single game. He was accused of failing to report alleged match-fixing involving former club Siena in the 2010-11 season.

Conte, whose assistant coach Angelo Alessio was also banned, is set to appeal the decision and Juventus said both retained their full support.

Charges against Conte of direct involvement in match-fixing were dismissed last month, but the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said it was satisfied Conte was aware it was taking place during his time with Siena.

Conte had a plea bargain deal rejected by the FIGC earlier this month. He put forward a proposal which would have seen him serve a three-month suspension and pay a fine of 200,000 euros.

The federation has now confirmed the 10-month sanction.

Police had previously said Conte was being investigated on suspicion of sporting fraud and fraudulent association over allegations concerning a match between his Serie B side Siena and Novara in April 2011.

In addition to the ban for Alessio, who was Conte's assistant at Siena, former Lecce president Giovanni Semeraro and ex-Grosseto president Piero Camilli are also facing suspensions.

"Juventus reiterates its full support for Antonio Conte and Angelo Alessio in the hope the next stage of the process will finally prove their innocence," read a Juventus statement.

"A group of legal professionals have been appointed by the individuals concerned and, with the full support of the club, is already working to prepare grounds for an appeal."

case

  • The action followed the launch of a match-fixing task force last June in response to a number of high-profile cases.

  • Former Atalanta captain and Italy midfielder Cristiano Doni was banned for three-and-a-half years in August 2011 for his part in the 'Calcioscommesse' scandal involving Serie B matches last season. He was also arrested in December 2011 over match-fixing and betting allegations.

  • In addition, former Lazio and Italy striker Giuseppe Signori was banned for five years and 15 other players were banned for between one and five years for their parts.

Grosseto and Lecce have both been excluded from Serie B, the Italian second tier, for the 2012-13 season for their part in the scandal of direct involvement in match-fixing. Both clubs have been relegated to Lega Pro, which covers Italy's third and fourth divisions.

Six other players - Leonardo Bonucci, Simone Pepe, Marco di Vaio, Salvatore Masiello, Daniele Padelli and Giuseppe Vives - have been acquitted of the charges against them.

In May, police searched more than 30 homes, including those of players, trainers and administrators of clubs in Serie A, Serie B and the lower divisions.

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri, 32, was held along with former Genoa midfielder Omar Milanetto, while officers visited Italy's pre-Euro 2012 training camp to question left-back Domenico Criscito, 25.

Five people were also arrested in Hungary on suspicion of being part of an illegal international betting ring.

Pique: We'd love to have Song

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says Arsenal's Alexandre Song would be welcome at the Catalan giants.

Barca have made the Cameroon midfielder a transfer priority, according to reports in the Spanish press, although no official bid has been made.

And Pique believes Song would fit in well at Barca under new coach Tito Vilanova.

"I have followed his career and he has become a very good player," the centre-back told El Mundo Deportivo.

"He is physically very strong and is good with the ball at his feet.

"We are open to his arrival," he added. "If he comes, and from what I have read he could do, we would love to have him."

Reds safely through

Liverpool are safely into the Europa League play-offs after a 3-0 win against FC Gomel at Anfield.

Already a goal to the good following last week's first leg in Belarus, the Reds completed the job back on Merseyside thanks to goals from Fabio Borini, Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson.

Suarez was a surprise starter having only joined up with Brendan Rodgers' squad at the start of the week but the Uruguayan showed no signs of fatigue despite having captained his country in the Olympic Games football tournament.

The 25-year-old was at the heart of all Liverpool's best moves and created their opener on 21, bamboozling the Gomel defence and creating the space for Borini to fire in a first time shot - his first goal for the club.

Steven Gerrard was the next to benefit from Suarez' magic, the former Ajax striker unselfishly squaring the ball for his skipper to finish into an open goal five minutes before the break.

With the tie all but over, Liverpool took their foot off the gas after the break although the crowd - including transfer target Joe Allen - were given something to cheer 20 minutes from time when Johnson fired in a dipping left foot volley from 20-yards to complete the scoring.

Mancini blames club director of football

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is furious at the lack of investment at the club this summer – and has once more laid the blame at the door of Brian Marwood.

Mancini is believed to want Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, plus Italy midfielder Daniele de Rossi, having already given up on first-choice target Robin van Persie, who seems to be bound for Manchester United.

And it is clear he is not happy.

"After four months, I don't know what to say. You need to ask Brian Marwood," said Mancini. "I am not the sporting director. I can't say anything about players."

Asked whether he was happy with the management structure at City, in which Marwood determines the overall policy, Mancini replied.

"I am not happy - but I don't know what to say."

Carrick could be used in defence

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Michael Carrick could provide emergency cover at the back for the start the new season.

The 31-year-old midfielder stepped into a defensive role against Barcelona in Gothenburg on Wednesday night in the midst of an injury crisis, and may have to do so again with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all currently unfit.

Ferguson told the club's official website, www.manutd.com: "Smalling is out for three months. Jones got a muscle injury in his back and was sent home from Norway, so the area we're concerned about is centre-back."

He added: "Evans won't be ready for the start of the season. He won't be far away, but he won't be ready.

"Smalling is out and I can't give you an update with Jones because we've not fully diagnosed that.

"But Michael Carrick was absolutely brilliant [in Sweden] with his passing the ball and his interceptions. He was fantastic."

Ameobi expects tough battle for top-five finish

Shola Ameobi admits matching last season's top-five finish would be the biggest achievement of his career on Tyneside.

Newcastle will head into the new campaign having created a new expectation following their remarkable and largely unheralded surge into the upper reaches of the Barclays Premier League.

But Ameobi, who has played Champions League football and suffered the pain of relegation during his time at St James' Park, knows repeating the feat will be a tough challenge.

The 30-year-old told the Journal: "It's certainly going to be really difficult to replicate what we did last season.

"Just look at teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea - I can't see them doing as badly this time in terms of where they finished in the league last season, so we are going to have to raise the bar again.

"If we did manage to do that, for me, it would mean finishing in a European spot again this season. Certainly, as I look back at my career with Newcastle, to do that this time would be our biggest every achievement."

Mourinho - Kaka can leave

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has revealed that playmaker Kaka can leave the club, but only at the right price.

The Brazil playmaker has been strongly linked with a move back to his old club AC Milan after falling down the pecking order under Mourinho.

Madrid are seemingly keen to sign Croatia international Luka Modric from Tottenham before the close of the summer transfer window, and Kaka is deemed surplus to requirements.

And now Mourinho has disclosed that he is open to the idea of selling the 30-year-old is a suitable offer arrives.

"If Kaka stays I would be happy and I am happy if he wants to go. In football it is normal that the players play where they want," the Portuguese told AS.

"He is a very good footballer and prepared to be at his maximum level. If he decides to stay, then perfect.

"If he goes, that's perfect too but we are not going to give him away for free. Those that want him have to pay for him."

Lucas Moura join PSG

Paris Saint-Germain have beaten Manchester United in the race to land £30 million-rated Brazilian midfielder Lucas Moura.

PSG have confirmed that the 19-year-old, who was also being chased by Inter Milan, would join them in January on a four-and-a-half year contract. He will not join his new team until January 2013.

The player is in Brazil's squad at the Olympic Games in London and has also played for his country's senior side.

"By signing a young talent of the quality of Lucas Rodrigues Moura Da Silva, Paris Saint-Germain is already preparing (for) the future," the French club said.

PSG did not disclose the transfer fee which has been widely reported by local media to be about 45 million euros, or £35m.

Qatari-backed PSG had already spent more than 100 million euros on players in the summer in an attempt to dominate Ligue 1 and challenge for European honours.

New signings have included forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Thiago Silva from AC Milan and Argentine forward Ezequiel Lavezzi from Napoli.

Their splurge is bound to raise questions about whether they can fit in with UEFA's Financial Fair Play policy designed to stop clubs spending more than they can afford.

Lucas, an attacking midfielder, helped Brazil win the South American U20 championship in Peru last year, scoring a hat-trick as they demolished Uruguay 6-0 in the final.

He made his Sao Paulo debut in 2010, having joined the club five years earlier.

Paris SG will dominate Ligue 1

Few doubt that Paris St Germain's extravagant spending will land them the Ligue 1 title this season, possibly with several games to spare, and even titleholders Montpellier appear to have thrown in the towel.

Qatari-owned PSG have splurged almost a €100 million ($124.13 million) on spectacular signings such as Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazil's Thiago Silva, both from AC Milan, and many expect a one-horse race for the French title.

PSG had expected to dominate the league last season but they were stunned by Montpellier, who claimed their maiden league title.

This time, not even the defending champions believe they will be able to offer a credible challenge to Carlo Ancelotti's team.

"Even if we could upset them on the pitch, we will have to fight for the second place. They are out of reach," said Montpellier full back Henri Bedimo.

"We have to end in the top three. Second will be perfect," added the club's president Louis Nicollin.

Montpellier have stuck by their prudent transfer policy, spending barely €12 million to strengthen the squad while Olivier Giroud, last season's Ligue 1 joint topscorer with 21 goals, has departed for Arsenal.

The southerners have banked on Argentina's Emanuel Herrera, who has spent most of his career in South American second tier sides, and French prospect Anthony Mounier to make up for Giroud's absence.

They have also landed defender Daniel Congre from Toulouse to give them a stronger physical presence for their Champions League campaign.

Lille, the 2010/11 champions and third last season, will also try to stay in the top three despite the departure of Belgian forward Eden Hazard, twice winner of the Ligue 1 Player of the Season award, who has joined Chelsea.

They moved fast to bring in France playmaker Marvin Martin and Ivorian forward Salomon Kalou in time for their Champions League playoff at the end of August.

"It's impossible to replace Eden, but we were prepared. When major players leave, we know how to handle it," coach Rudi Garcia told Reuters. "We choose players who match up our philosophy."

DREAM TEAM

PSG hope their signings can help them join the European elite.

"Who was talking about the Ligue 1 before PSG made this dream come true?" Ibrahimovic told reporters when he held his first press conference in front of an unusually packed auditorium at Parc des Princes.

The 30-year-old Sweden striker, who said he was joining a "dream team", will play alongisde his former AC Milan teammate Thiago Silva, bought for a reported fee of 42 million euros.

They joined former Napoli forward Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marco Verratti, a 19-year-old Italian prospect from Pescara sometimes compared to Andrea Pirlo.

"It was a bit strange to see them coming. Until now, we were more used to watch them play on TV," full-back Christophe Jallet told Reuters. "It is now clear that we've moved the next level, the European level."

In contrast to PSG's spending spree, former power Olympique Lyon, who will not feature in the Champions League for the first time since 2000 after last season's fourth-place finish, were quiet on the transfer market.

Olympique Marseille's new coach Elie Baup, the replacement for Didier Deschamps after he was given the France national team job, has refused to set any goals for his squad after last season's 10th place, their worst finish in more than a decade.

Rooney ready for kick-off

Wayne Rooney feels he is poised to start the new Premier League season flying high as the Manchester United striker hones his fitness.

Rooney was given extended leave following his exertions in Euro 2012, even if he only competed in two matches after serving a two-game ban at the start of the campaign.

The 26-year-old returned to action for United in Sunday's goalless pre-season friendly with Norwegian side Valerenga in Oslo, playing for 76 minutes before being substituted.

Ahead of Wednesday night's high-profile friendly clash with Barcelona in Copenhagen, Rooney can feel his sharpness returning.

"I'm happy with how I'm doing," said Rooney.

"I've been training for almost two weeks and I've been working hard. Everything's going well so far. I feel good.

"Everybody needs games to get up to match fitness, not just me.

"I'm training well, though, and I'm looking forward to the next few games. Hopefully, by the start of the season, I'll be ready to play."

Rooney believes Barcelona will provide an ample test of United's pre-season form ahead of the league opener with Everton at Goodison Park on August 20.

"It's great to play in big games and Barcelona is one of them," added Rooney on manutd.com.

"It's all part of our preparation and we need to make sure we do the right things. We want to enjoy the game and get our fitness ready for the first game of the season.

"The result, in some ways, isn't the most important thing. What's important is the fitness and the sharpness."

One concern levelled at United so far is they have only scored three goals in four pre-season matches.

But fit-again skipper Nemanja Vidic, who returned to the side against Valerenga after eight months out with a cruciate ligament injury, is far from worried.

"When you see the kind of chances we're creating it's a relief," said Vidic.

"I know we haven't scored many goals, that we're not clinical in front of goal yet, but it will come.

"We have the next few games to work on that and fix that. I'm not really worried about it.

"If you look at the team that played on Sunday I think we had about five or six players who were playing their first game after almost two months.

"Some played almost 90 minutes and to do that after nearly two months off is a difficult ask, especially when we played against a team that has 15 games already in their legs.

"But I think a lot of guys have returned from their summer break a lot fitter than usual. You can see it in their body language and this is a positive sign."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson returns to manage the squad for the game after missing the match with Valerenga as he was on other club business.

Patrice Evra has also rejoined the squad having flown home on Sunday to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.

Downing eye Europa League

Stewart Downing is determined to dispel the notion that he is a "confidence player" after his form divided opinion amongst Liverpool fans.

Downing, 28, was an £18million arrival at Anfield last year after Kenny Dalglish lured him to the club from Aston Villa.

From such a lavish acquisition, fans expected more than the two goals and no assists that he returned.

Questions over his morale arose because there were occasions when it was claimed he was overwhelmed by his transfer fee, prompting fans to draw the conclusion he must be a confidence player.

"I seem to be labelled that a lot," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"I just like to be in the team and doing well. It's not nice when you are not getting results and we certainly took a lot of stick last season when it wasn't happening, especially with us new players coming in.""I was disappointed with how last season went but I'm not sure I'm a 'confidence' player.

Downing notched the goal which gave the Reds victory over FC Gomel in Brendan Rodgers' first competitive game in charge last week.

And while some players may view the Europa League through disparaging eyes, Downing insists Rodgers has stressed the importance of winning games, no matter the competition.

He added: "It is the second tier of European competition but it's certainly one we still want to win.

"Earlier on you don't know where you are going to be playing but the further on you get, when the Champions League teams drop in, then there are some good sides in the competition.

"The manager has stressed from day one that whatever competition we are in, we go to win it.

"So you can see his mentality, he wants to win every game, he is hungry and his players have got to be the same otherwise you don't get picked."
