Donovan: Team GB worse without Beckham

Stuart Pearce has made a big mistake leaving David Beckham out of his Team GB squad for the London 2012 Olympics this summer, according to LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan.

LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan admits he was shocked by David Beckham's Olympic omission

The 37-year-old midfielder has been in imperious form in the MLS this past month, and added to his recent goals and assists haul by setting up two goals in a 3-1 win over local rivals Chivas USA.

Beckham has scored four and made four goals since his surprise Olympic snub earlier this month, putting Pearce under further pressure to justify the omission of Britain's most famous footballer.

Donovan understands that many determine the decision as strange based purely on a marketing level, but says that on footballing factors alone, the former England captain merits a place in the squad.

"David has been playing great and can still do it," he is quoted in The Sun. "It's a shame he's not going to London to play.

"He's been terrific just recently and I think most teams in the world would want a guy like that on their side in the form he's in right now."

Beckham set up goals for Donovan and fellow forward Robbie Keane - the former Tottenham striker scoring his fifth goal in the last four games.
