Pardew slams transfer ´smokescreens´

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has lamented the lack of truth that fans are given regarding transfer targets in the media.

Andy Carroll - who left the Tyneside club on transfer deadline day to Liverpool for 35 million pounds last January - has been linked with a 10-million-pound return to the north-east, while Demba Ba's future has been a source of speculation after it was reported his contract had a seven-million-pound release clause.

Fabricio Coloccini, Tim Krul and Cheikh Tiote have also been linked with moves away from Sports Direct Arena lately, and Pardew confessed it annoyed him that fans were so frequently misled by false reports.

"Our fans are sold these smokescreens and it's not fair on them," he told reporters on Friday.

"They just want to have honesty and the truth in both those is far from what has been portrayed."

"We are trying to get the best possible players with the budgets we have, and we are working hard at that."

"(Chief scout) Graham Carr does a terrific job for us, as his scouting team does and as my staff do, so on that side of it we are really trying to cover everything we can."

"It's difficult. If one of the big players makes a move, it stimulates the market, but it looks like everybody is jostling as usual and hopefully we are not going to have this last-day scenario, or the last few days, that we had in the last window which really affected us."

"We have made it clear to all the clubs that if there is any business to be done with us, you had better get in quickly because obviously we are stained from last year."

"But looking around and speaking to other managers it's very difficult to get value in this window and we are all a bit wary of that."

The former West Ham United boss denied any knowledge of bids for Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison, but admitted negotiations may have been held at boardroom level.

"It's important for us to keep what business we are doing in house," Pardew said.

"There has been no communication, certainly from manager to manager, but sometimes these deals at football clubs are taking place behind the scenes."

"As far as I am concerned, there is no definite bid in from us."

Newcastle are currently seventh in the Premier League, just one point behind sixth-placed Liverpool, and will look to build on a triumphant 3-0 win over Manchester United when they host QPR on Sunday.

"There is a little bit of pressure from below, but there's also a little bit of pressure we can apply to the teams above, so the result might be that it galvanises us into a really good performance," he said.

It will be Mark Hughes’ first match in charge of QPR this weekend, but the former Manchester City boss will be without ex-Magpies midfielder Joey Barton, who is suspended for the north-east clash.

"It's a bonus for us because Joey knows the place and he knows how to perform here. He was very, very good for us," Pardew said.
